WHY CHOOSE SAGEOS

For over 40 years, SAGEOS has developed in-depth expertise in geosynthetics testing, method development, and technical support for complex projects. This experience has been built through work carried out for a wide range of manufacturers, engineering firms, and public owners, both in Canada and internationally.

At SAGEOS, independence and scientific rigor are at the core of our laboratory services. We are among the first laboratories in Canada to be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, with dual recognition from CCN and A2LA, and international acceptance of our test reports ensured through the ILAC-MRA agreement. We are also a certified member of the Geosynthetics Accreditation Institute’s GAI-LAP program, which confirms that our results meet the highest international standards of quality and impartiality.

Free from any commercial affiliation with manufacturers or contractors, our work is entirely independent, ensuring credibility, transparency, and trust.

Our projects are led by qualified engineers and carried out by highly trained technicians within a strictly controlled quality environment. All laboratory equipment is calibrated in accordance with rigorous requirements and verified on a daily basis to ensure measurement accuracy and reproducibility.

SAGEOS offers comprehensive coverage of geosynthetics testing, ranging from index and compliance tests to advanced performance and durability evaluations.

Our capabilities span all key geosynthetic functions—confinement, drainage, filtration, reinforcement, and protection—and are supported by in-depth characterization of mechanical, hydraulic, thermal, chemical, and durability properties for critical infrastructure applications.

Beyond standard methods, we also conduct testing adapted to real-world service conditions, including aging scenarios, long-term loading, and exposure to severe environments.

Since more than four decades, SAGEOS has served as a reference third-party laboratory for the geosynthetics and geotechnical engineering community. Our test reports are recognized by major industrial clients, engineering firms, and regulatory authorities across North America and worldwide.

Whether for product qualification, performance validation, technical investigations, or comparative analyses, SAGEOS delivers reliable, impartial, and actionable results to support robust and sustainable technical decision-making.

SAGEOS conducts its testing in accordance with the main international standards and normative frameworks, including ASTM, ISO, NF EN, BNQ, CAN, DIN, BS, and GRI, in order to meet the technical requirements specific to the various regions and regulatory environments where geosynthetics are used.

When project requirements are not fully covered by standardized methods, SAGEOS implements adapted testing procedures developed in alignment with existing standards, while respecting their underlying principles, technical requirements, and recognized industry best practices.

SAGEOS stands out for its high responsiveness in handling inquiries, preparing bilingual service proposals (French and English), and delivering testing and reporting services.

Depending on the nature of the tests, certain results can be provided on the same day, while others are delivered according to clearly defined timelines agreed upon at the time the mandate is awarded.

With a broad range of equipment, multidisciplinary expert teams, and an integrated organizational structure, SAGEOS operates as a one-stop shop for geosynthetics testing, from the initial request through to the final report.

While our services remain competitive, our primary focus is on service quality, result reliability, and overall efficiency for our clients.

Over the years, SAGEOS has actively contributed to the development and evolution of several standards and remains involved in standardization work and technical exchanges within the industry. Our scientific and technical publications—particularly in the areas of test device development, performance parameter analysis, and method improvement—reflect this ongoing contribution.

R&D EXCELLENCE

PRODUCT AND APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT & OPTIMIZATION

SAGEOS supports manufacturers, consulting engineers, and project owners throughout the entire innovation cycle, from initial concept development to performance validation under real service conditions. Our work aims to improve the performance, durability, and reliability of geosynthetic solutions while reducing technical risks prior to market introduction or field implementation.

Our teams work on both materials and complete geosynthetic systems, including their interactions with soils, fluids, and exposure environments. Projects carried out include advanced geomembranes and geocomposites, containment and drainage systems, gas and liquid management, as well as solutions adapted to aggressive environments, cold climates, and extended service life requirements.

When standardized methods do not allow for adequate characterization of a behavior, performance, or degradation mechanism, SAGEOS develops, adapts, and optimizes testing methods in alignment with existing standards and recognized industry practices.

This work includes the development of test devices, the study of influential parameters, and the adaptation of protocols to accurately represent real service conditions. It notably covers the evaluation of long-term behavior, creep and time-dependent deformation, rapid crack propagation, UV exposure, gas and liquid transmissivity, as well as soil–geosynthetic interactions under realistic loading conditions.

SAGEOS conducts and participates in applied research and experimental development projects aimed at advancing the functional performance, durability, and environmental sustainability of geosynthetics, in close collaboration with its partners and clients.

These projects are carried out with industrial, institutional, and academic partners, as well as with regulatory bodies when required. They notably address:

the durability and long-term aging of materials,
interface behavior and soil–geosynthetic interactions,
containment, drainage, and fluid and gas management systems,
the integration of innovative, recycled, bio-based, or biodegradable materials,
environmental applications such as mine tailings management, gas capture, odor control, anaerobic digestion, and erosion control in sensitive environments.

This work also includes the development of calculation tools, numerical models, and design-support software incorporating the actual performance of geosynthetics, in order to support engineering design and informed decision-making by engineers and project owners.

Beyond standardized methods, SAGEOS designs and implements advanced testing programs and custom experimental protocols to address specific technical needs, particular service conditions, or emerging regulatory requirements.

These tests may incorporate realistic or extreme conditions—including complex loading, aggressive chemical environments, and long-term thermal, hydraulic, or mechanical stresses—and are supported by a broad range of specialized equipment. The scientific expertise and applied engineering approach of our teams enable the generation of reliable data that can be directly used for design, validation, and decision-making under real-world conditions.

The SAGEOS teams actively contribute to knowledge dissemination through scientific and technical publications, specialized conferences, and standardization activities, both in Canada and internationally.

Over the years, our researchers and experts have published several hundred scientific papers and technical communications, many of which have been presented at major international conferences. These publications focus in particular on the development and optimization of test methods, performance characterization, analysis of critical parameters, and the improvement of laboratory and field testing practices.

Recent work includes, among others:

  • the optimization of nanocomposite membranes for HDPE geomembranes,
  • the thermal, chemical, and mechanical durability of geomembranes, including behavior at high temperatures and under solar radiation,
  • the quantification of plasticizers in PVC geomembranes,
  • the dewatering of mine tailings and oil sands using electroconductive geocomposites,
  • the filtration performance of geotextiles in complex environments (biological clogging, acid drainage, leachates),
  • the development of multilayer geocomposites for drainage and gas extraction,
  • the gas permeability of geomembranes (methane, CO₂),
  • the influence of color and co-extruded layers on membrane behavior,
  • hydrophobic treatments applied to natural fibers, virgin or recycled,
  • as well as the development and characterization of new test methods (friction, compression, light transmission, thermal expansion, etc.).

These contributions reflect SAGEOS’s scientific leadership and its commitment to advancing practices within the geosynthetics and advanced textile materials industries. They are widely used and referenced by industrial, institutional, and regulatory partners, and represent a key lever for knowledge transfer toward reliable, durable, and field-ready solutions.

TIP: You can enter a product type (e.g., geotextile, geomembrane, GCL, geogrid) and/or a property (e.g., tensile, puncture, transmissivity, permeability) to instantly display the applicable tests. To return to the full list, simply clear the entries in the “Search” field.
