CTT and the Defense Sector

CTT, your strategic partner in textile innovations and advanced materials for the Defense sector.

CTT, your strategic partner in textile innovations and advanced materials for the Defense sector.

As a key player in the defense field, CTT and its experts accelerate the development of textile, polymer, and composite products, providing access to the Defense sector.

CTT is a preferred partner for manufacturers supplying products to the Defense industry. We conduct applied research and product development in the areas of protection, camouflage, and comfort for advanced textile systems. Additionally, our expertise in polymers and 3D composite preforms enables manufacturers and technical solution developers to offer equipment for ground or airborne vehicles.

Expertise –

Product Development

CBRN Protection: Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear. We develop barrier materials providing CBRN protection for first responder PPE and military applications.

Camouflage properties and prints durability in the UV, visible, and near-infrared (Near-IR) spectrum. We develop new durable print formulations that meet the strictest reflectance criteria for combat uniforms.

Development of textile solutions providing thermal protection against heat and flames.

Rapid manufacturing of dry preforms, 3D composites using TFP and radial braiding, enabling defect-free fiber placement (reliable and repeatable), controlled material consumption, and minimal production waste. Target products: composites for space systems, satellites, unmanned aircraft, drones, reinforcement and armor parts, helicopter blades, and propellers.

Active and smart textiles: We can produce heating textiles for personal protective equipment used in Arctic exploration and northern operations, as well as textile sensors for monitoring physiological parameters.

Material interfaces: Our work on PPE and composites leads us to develop solutions to improve fiber-resin adhesion in composites, coating durability, and laminated product adhesion.

Human factors and ergonomics: Operational equipment and PPE are effectively developed when human factors and system ergonomics are considered from the early stages of product development. Our approach integrates comfort and thermoregulation elements from the pre-project discussions.

Expertise – Development of

Material Characterization Methods

Thermal insulation of exploration and combat gear for Arctic conditions: multilayer textiles, winter boots, gloves, sleeping bags… Presented at the DSSPM Outlook Days in 2023, our product development and measurement’s expertise is unique in Canada. Our thermal manikin equipment now allows testing of complete clothing systems.

Mechanical performance of polymeric, textile, and composite materials at low temperatures: whether textiles or composite reinforcement parts, structural components, or field, aeronautical, and aerospace applications.
We can perform numerous characterization tests in controlled environments based on your experimental needs:

      • Flex resistance of textile protective membranes at low temperatures
      • Deformation and failure of composites down to -70°C
      • Impact resistance of textile and composite materials (-70°C)
      • Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
      • Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA)

Development of geosynthetic behavior methods in controlled environments: Inclined plane and slip measurement at low temperatures for geomembranes and stabilization of slopes, roads, airstrips, and other temporary structures.

Laboratory Excellence –

Product Performance Validation and Technical Specifications

Our ISO 17025 accredited laboratories allow us to verify the performance properties of textile, geosynthetic, polymer, and composite materials to meet market tender criteria:

  • Accelerated aging

  • Textile and polymer chemistry

  • Flammability of PPE, composites, and polymers

  • Mechanical properties: tensile testing at low and high temperatures, compression and bursting strength, from 5N to 300kN; impact resistance

  • Physical properties: textile construction, polymer hardness, dilatometry…

  • Microbiology: resistance to bacteria, mold, and viral penetration

  • Water behavior: waterproofness, water vapor permeability, drainage, transmissivity

  • Medical: Testing of barrier materials for medical applications such as isolation gowns, masks, surgical drapes, and gowns, textile implants

  • Custom testing for your own developments or technical specifications

Specification Development: Our expertise in product development and knowledge of measurement systems, supported by our high-tech laboratories, allow us to assist you in developing technical documentation and writing your product specifications: properties–methods–parameters and target values.
