Next-Generation PFAS-Free CBRN Protective Membrane

Developing innovative materials in partnership with the industry is our specialty.

CTT and Stedfast (www.stedfast.com) have been awarded a research grant from Quebec’s Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy (MEIE), through PRIMA Québec (Quebec’s Research and Innovation Hub for Advanced Materials), to develop a protective barrier membrane against Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) threats.

As a key component of personal protective equipment for first responders, barrier textiles must provide maximum protection in scenarios such as industrial accidents or terrorist attacks. Overcoming the technical challenges associated with these products is particularly exciting for our research team. The commonly used reference standard is NFPA 1990 / NFPA 1994, and CTT’s experts can also test the products developed throughout this project.

The main challenge is developing a PFAS-free CBRN membrane, eliminating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to reduce the environmental footprint of these advanced materials. More information on these substances is available here.

Part of this research is conducted under the Ecotextile Research Chair at CTT Group.
