Water-jet cutting composites

Equipped for Testing: Complex-Shaped Sample Cutting, a CTT Expertise
Preparing samples with complex shapes is a challenge that CTT meets thanks to our waterjet cutting equipment.

The CTT group has a waterjet cutting machine that facilitates the preparation of complex-shaped samples to meet the specific specimen template requirements outlined in standards.

The principle is to reduce machining stresses by using a high-pressure water jet mixed with an abrasive during the specimen cutting process.

This equipment can cut metal, glass, plastic, various composites, tile, rubber, and even foam with a positioning accuracy of 0.08 mm. This technology reduces the risk of delaminating the material during machining, as the cutting is done cold without overheating the specimen.

We frequently use this equipment to prepare ASTM D638 Type 1 to 5 tensile specimens and ASTM D695 compression specimens, which have specific curvature radii in the transition area outside the grip.

Additionally, we cut specimens for ASTM D5379 and ASTM D7078 shear tests using the waterjet, which allows for high-quality notches in the area where stress is concentrated during loading.

The versatility of waterjet cutting is a major asset for preparing polymer and composite samples, as it allows us to quickly try several alternatives and reduce both testing time and costs.
